EXPERIENCE OVERVIEW

Learning to design for developers.

I was a Product Design Intern for the Platform Team at C3.AI, a B2B AI software company with a mission of creating a transformative AI development platform & suite of AI applications to help companies make the most of their data. Working on AI Studio, C3’s low-code AI developer tool, I led an end-to-end project for enhancing the documentation viewing experience for developers -- allowing developers to seamlessly access documentation at the right time and place within their complex workflows. This project is NDA protected.

internship takeaways & reflection

There were many moments for me where topics and conversations in meetings flew over my area of knowledge. While initially uncomfortable, these were valuable learning moments if I was willing to speak up and ask the questions that may have seemed for lack of a better word, “stupid," to most industry professionals. I was grateful to be in a space where all my questions were not only accepted, but highly encouraged and welcomed. Through pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I now find myself with a whole new wealth of industry knowledge in not only product design, but in artificial intelligence and machine learning workflows.

Grateful for a great team.

Working at C3 AI has been one of the most pivotal and inspiring work experiences for me. I was able to collaborate and learn from a talented and supportive team of designers, engineers, and product managers — all of whom have shown me the joy of designing solutions at a complex enterprise level. I’ve taken away with me some priceless industry knowledge and amazing mentors who have continued to be a great career support system for me even after my internship conclusion. I am beyond grateful to have had this experience and look forward to future opportunities to work in a similar space.

Leading my first design project, meant that I would be working with product managers, engineers, and other designers alike. As expected, everyone’s communication looked different — one word could mean one thing to me and a totally different thing to another. Ideas were often jumbled together, priorities differed and technical terminology knowledge varied between professions. A huge skill I took out of my summer at C3 was learning how to navigate these cross-functional conversations to ensure our project team was able to stay in sync with one another.

Ask all the questions. Even the “stupid” ones.

Cross-functional communication is an art.
